Yesterday, papers including the instructions of the Continental Congress for the American peace commissioners were put on auction. The instructions in code appear to be the version for Franklin, and are very interesting for historical cryptography, because they are in John Jay's book code. The same instructions for John Adams were in a polyalphabetic cipher with a key "CR", and it is well-known Adams could not decipher them.
